Stoic and solemn, King Caexiael is far from his gregarious wife, Queen Amariael. Yet the king of the faenriin has devoted followers as well, as much for his purported ability to speak directly to Caexeros, the Aesren of destruction, as for his own, mysterious self.
Case in point, many more rumors swirl around the Blood Red King than the Ivory Queen, partially because his rumors have a habit of remaining unproven one way or the other.
Why does he disappear every century or so, retreating to the royal palace of Ayaliis for a decade or two? Is his detached grace at court events and his impassive resolve in his edicts really his true self, or is there something deeper, something warmer, below? Something reserved for Queen Amariael alone—or perhaps, someone even closer to the Quiet King?
For all the whispers that pervade the Court of Ayaliis, the faenriin king and queen, different as they are, remain unified in their refusal to reveal anything below their surfaces. Flawless and cold as statues.
It is said that one day, a young King Caexiael went deep into the miasma in search of something he would not name.
When he returned, not a single scar or slash was upon his skin or clothes, and in his shadow walked a giant wolf. Her fur smoldered like ashes over embers, and her eyes were as deep red as the Blood Red King’s.
His perfect shade. Ever silent. Ever watching.
The Quiet King has never spoken his familiar’s name in the company of others, including Her Majesty. Perhaps he has never given her a name; perhaps it is something shared between faenriin and familiar alone. Or perhaps it is something that needn’t be named at all, like the ghostly scent that rises from her fur and lingers in her wake. A sweetness like heliotropes, chased by an even fainter scent of burning.
All of this is undeniable. And yet some faenriin swear that but a few hundred years ago, there was another animal at His Majesty’s side—not a wolf but a gyrfalcon. And before that, a stag with antlers that glowed with fire. And before that—
No, certainly. King Caexiael’s familiar has only ever been an ember wolf. To think elsewise is insanity.

A faenriin without a familiar isn’t much of a faenriin at all, are they? Sure, they’re better off than the Unblessed, but that’s like saying it’s better to be alive than a ghost.
